I checked the record file and I can't find an actual death certificate,
only the December 13th, 1916 obituary in the Dubuque times-Journal, and
a related article on the small quarantine. Another newspaper, the
Dubuque Telegraph-Herald, describes some "gossip" type information, and
it related that Fred was not happy with how his neighbors looked at him,
as if he was contaminated, so he talked about moving to Plano, Illinois.
The city found out and told him he had to remain for one year and get a
doctor to clear him to relocate because of the Yellow Fever scare. He
wrote a letter of appeal and one of his claims was that the ghost of his
wife was driving him mad, causing nervousness and compulsive behavior.
They may have been either separated or divorced at that time. This
letter of appeal may have exaggerations in it because he wanted to
bypass the quarantine and move, because he wanted to separate from
Emily.According to your info, she seems to have been alive after 1916; the
obituary could be incorrect. It was quite common that an obituary was
set up for the printing presses in advance, then accidentally published.
I have an Emily Umbreit and Richard Umbreit at that address in the
County records (property certificate), but no mention of children.
