Just googling and see this 2002 message. I used to
spend a lot of free time at the movie theaters.
Until I turned 12 and they charged adult prices.
We always liked the Grand because they had the best
sound. Across the street on Main was the Avon and
often you could see a triple feature and cartoons.
My folks loved it because we would be in there for
5 hours or more. At 10th and Main was the State
and they showed a lot of crap. The Strand at 12th
and Main was the second run theater and you could
often see a great double feature. And the Orpheum
down at 4th and Main. The Capitol at 24th and
Central was closed by the time I was going to the
movies. I think our favorite haunt in grammar
school and high school was the Varsity (also called "the bucket"). It was over on Loras Blvd.
and Booth St. I remember I saw GONE WITH THE WIND
for the first time over there. They would have
the movies after the Strand. When I was at Loras
College the O'Rourkes sold it and it became a
laundromat. I was in Dubuque a couple years back and I think it is still a place to do your washing.
