Harold N. Schmitt

Mr. Harold N. Schmitt, 88, of Heritage Manor Nursing Home, formerly of 7965 Old Highway Road, Peosta, Iowa, died at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2003, at the nursing home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Mr. Schmitt farmed his entire life.

He was born on Dec. 16, 1915, in Monticello, Iowa, son of Michael and Lucile (Reisdorf) Schmitt. He married Madonna Koetz on Feb. 27, 1943, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Peosta, where he was a member for many years.

He also was a member of the Northeast Iowa Fox Hunters Association.

Surviving are his wife, Madonna Schmitt, of Peosta; three sons, Richard Schmitt, of Leavenworth, Kan., Ken (Carol) Schmitt, of Dubuque, and John (Robin) Schmitt, of Buford, Ga.; two daughters, Pat (Ron) Schueller, of Cuba City, Wis., and Joann Schmitt, of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, Jim (Ann) Schmitt, of Dyersville, Iowa, and Robert (Mary) Schmitt, of Dubuque; four sisters, Evelyn Hammes, of Emmett, Idaho, Dorothea (Bill) Von Ah and Mary Lou Lindecker, both of Dubuque, and Rosie (Ed) Horsfield, of Epworth, Iowa; nine grandchildren, Karen (Ron) Snyder, of Peosta, Greg (Marcia) Schueller, of Cuba City, Gail (Kevin) Wiegman, of Dubuque, Dana Schueller, of Chicago, Dianne (Ron) Jentz, of Platteville, Wis., Lynee (Rod) Robson, of Cuba City, Maureen Schmitt and Jared Schmitt, both of Dubuque, and Josh Schmitt, of Buford; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gerald and George Schmitt; and five sisters, Marguerite Richter, Marcella Schmitt, Gertrude McGovern, Bonnie Moses and Alice Burds.

In lieu of flowers, a Harold N. Schmitt Memorial Fund has been established by the family.

The family would like to express a special thank-you to the staff at Heritage Manor Nursing Home for the excellent care extended to Harold.
