PEOSTA, Iowa -- Mary K. Maas, 67, of 10851 Thunder Hills Road, Peosta, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, with family surrounding her bedside.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, in Peosta. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 4, at Hoffmann Schneider and Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

Mary was born on Nov. 10, 1940, in Dubuque, daughter of Fred and Florence (Winders) Schilling. She graduated from Peosta High School in 1958. She married Matthew M. Maas on July 4, 1959, in Peosta.

She was a homemaker in her earlier years, and then worked various jobs and retired from Northeast Iowa Community College after 12 years of service.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Mary was always happy, caring and lived her life to the fullest. She had a great sense of humor, a positive attitude and expressed her opinion. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and her smile and laughter will always be remembered.

She had three hobbies that she was very passionate about: Gambling at the casinos, hoping to hit the big one; going to as many garage sales as possible; and doing her laundry -- she always hung her clothes out, even in subzero weather. Most important to her was spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband, Matthew "Babe" Maas, of Peosta; five children, Matthew "Butch" (Linda) Maas, and Mike (Sherry) Maas, both of Peosta, Marie (Bryan) Blum, of Dubuque, Mark (Terri) Maas, of Epworth, and Marty (Kristin) Maas, of Philadelphia; 14 grandchildren, Jennifer, Melissa, Eric, Mindy, Mandy, Michael, Nicole, Justin, Audri, Brianna, JoAnna, Stephanie, Mark and Michele; a great-granddaughter, Ariahna; three brothers, Fred (Shirley) Schilling and Bob (Dorothy) Schilling, both of Dubuque, and John (Vicki) Schilling, of Richardsville; five sisters, Rita McFadden, of Lancaster, Pa., Darlene Berzle, and Wilma Schilling, both of Dubuque, Carol Schmitt, of Peosta, and Jean (Virgil) Hansen, of Dubuque; and a sister-in-law, Madalyn Schilling, of Peosta.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James and David Schilling.

Mary's family would like to thank Dr. Mark Fortson, Dr. John Whalen, Dr. Mark Hermann, and the nursing staff at Finley Hospital.
