Another old settlor has gone to his reward, thus thinning out the ranks of the pioneers. Dan McKeown, a well-known farmer of Washington Township, Dubuque County, expired Tuesday evening at 7 o’clock at Mercy Hospital. He entered that institution last week to undergo a surgical operation, the amputation of one of his toes, which was performed last Thursday. Blood poisoning set in, ending his life Tuesday evening. Mr. McKeown was about 62 years of age, has lived on his farm nearly forty years, and was a familiar figure on First Street, Dubuque, on Market days. His wife died some three years ago. By his demise five children, ranging in age from 5 to 22 years, are left orphans. The remains of Mr. McKeown were removed to his home for interment.

Daniel McKeown died at the age of about 62-63, resulting in a birth year of c1830-1831.
His obituary indicates he died at Mercy Hospital at Dubuque, Iowa on 30 Jan 1894. Another source indicates his death at his home in Washington Township, Dubuque County, Iowa on 31 Jan 1894.
Daniel McKeown was the son of Daniel and Rose McKeown. Daniel emigrated from Ireland with his mother in 1834. They arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada on the ship Betsy Heron.
Daniel McKeown married Mary Powers (1842-1890) on 19 March 1856 in Dubuque, Iowa. Mary Powers was born in Canada, and she was the oldest of the eight children of Matthew Powers (1814-1902) and Elizabeth Mary Keyes (1825-1888).
