Sister Antonita (Modesta) Soppe, OSF, age 84, of Dubuque, was called home peacefully on January 24, 2019. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, January 28, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. in Francis Chapel.To celebrate Sister Antonita's life, visitation will be from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 27, 2019with Funeral Vigil at 7:00 p.m. in Francis Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
Sister Antonita was born on March 28, 1914, in Worthington, IA, daughter of Anton B. and Caroline (Lehmann) Soppe.
She entered the Sisters of St. Francis September 17, 1933 and made her final profession of vows August 12, 1939. Sister received her master's degree in education administration at DePaul University in Chicago, IL. She ministered as an educator in Iowa at Danbury, Stacyville, Waterloo- Columbus High School, Des Moines-St. Pius X, Pomeroy, and Dubuque-Holy Ghost. In Illinois, Sister served at Chicago-Corpus Christi, Melrose Park, and Hazel Crest.
Sister is survived by her sister-in-law Rita Soppe, nieces and nephews, and her Franciscan sisters with whom she shared over 84 years of her life.
Sister was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Leonette (Ambrose) Scheller, Veralda (Chester) Beireis, Monica (Bernard) Ferguson, Melita (Orland) McCarthy, Mercedes (Peter) Berryhill, and Sister Agnetis Soppe, OSF; her brothers Reynold (Albertha), Jerome, Florian (Helen), Alvin, Valerian (Patricia), Eugene, Leon (Betty), and Clerus.
Memorials may be given to the Sisters of St. Francis, Dubuque, IA.
