The Dubuque Daily Herald, Thursday, July 17, 1879

Mr. Thomas Murphy, a resident of Dubuque for the last twenty-one years, died yesterday morning at half past seven o’clock, after an illness of six weeks, of liver complaint, aged 64 years. He resided at the south end of Bluff Street, on Dodge Street. He leaves a wife and five children to mourn his loss. Funeral today at 9 o’clock p.m. Services at the Cathedral.

Mr. Murphy was born in County Louth, Ireland, and came to Dubuque 21 years ago. During his long residence here, by his upright, honorable conduct, he won the esteem of all of whom in came in contact with, and his death is deeply deplored not only by the members of his family, but by the extensive circle of friends. His occupation was that of a laborer, and to his credit be it said that he dignified it. He was a strict Catholic and a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. It may be written on his tombstone that he was that noblest work of God, an honest man, in the years to come fame will not recall his name, but he has left to his children the influence of a good example and the bequest of a religious and moral training which will affect society for good long after his mortal remains shall have vanished into nothingness.

He was a loving devoted husband and father, gentle in word and action, charitable and self-respecting, performed his duties conscientiously and cheerfully, and thus admirably fulfilled the purpose of his creation. The remembrance of his many virtues is the most priceless legacy left his offspring. He died as he lived, a God fearing man, and has gone to meet the reward reserved for those who sacrifice pleasures and comforts in obedience to the higher call of duty.
