Edith Eloise Stuart Norman, 90, of Dubuque, died December 2, 2011, while with her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Pieter Vreede, in Noblesville, IN.
Edie was born June 21,1921, in Dubuque to Bert E. and Charlotte Anna (Atkinson) Stuart. She attended Dubuque Senior High School and graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Music degree. She also studied music at the Chicago Musical College. On August 29,1942, she married Wayne A. Norman, Sr., at St. Luke's Methodist Church in Dubuque. She and Wayne moved to Dayton, OH, where she taught at the Proctor School of Music and was a performing pianist. The couple returned to live in Dubuque and Edie continued her piano performing, taught piano lessons and played the organ at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
She was very active in local arts organizations and served in many capacities. She was a board member and past president of the Dubuque Arts Council Artists in Residence, as well as a member of the board of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, a founder and past president of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra League and founder of the Iowa Association of Local Arts Agencies.
At Westminster Presbyterian Church she served as a deacon. She volunteered in other civic organizations as well, including heading the Women's Division of the United Way, and served as a member of the Mt. Pleasant Board and past president of the Junior Board VNA. She was a long-time volunteer and past president of The Sunshine Circle at Finley Hospital and a member of Chapter IK PEO Sisterhood.
Edie is survived by her sister, Charlotte Stuart Harker; her children and their spouses, Wayne A. Norman, Jr. (Kathryn), Dr. Andrew S. Norman (Darrell), Dr. Beth Norman Vreede (Dr. Pieter); grandchildren, Sarah E. Norman, Heather A. Norman, Jennifer Norman Edwards (Erik), Aaron A. Norman (Annie), Cristan D. Norman (Alex Carter), Elisabeth M. Vreede and Catharine E. Vreede; great-grandchildren, Sascha Norman, Owen Edwards, Nicolas Norman and Atalie Norman. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and took great pride in all of them. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne, Sr. (2001), and her sister, June Stuart Campbell.
A service to celebrate her life will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am on December 19, 2011. Private committal services will be held at Center Grove Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Hoffmann Schneider Funeral Homes are in charge of the arrangements.
