Virginia (Hird) Nowlin, 82, of Apple Valley, Minn., formerly of Dubuque, died Tuesday, July 22, 1997, at United Hospital, St. Paul, Minn.

Private family services will be held. She will be cremated and her remains will be buried alongside her husband, Melvin, in the Nowlin family plot at Center Grove Cemetery, Dubuque.

She was born on April 11, 1915, in Dubuque, where she lived until 1973. She married Melvin Paul Nowlin on Oct. 21, 1936, at Summit Congregational United Church of Christ, Dubuque.

Virginia was very active in many clubs and organizations in Dubuque, as well as being a very accomplished local golfer. She was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Dubuque.

Surviving are her five children, Judith C. Leifheit, of Lyles, Tenn., Diane S. Siegrist, of Portland, Ore., Dr. Thomas E. Nowlin, of Cranbury, N.J., Patricia A. Kelly, of Apple Valley, and Nancy J. Orr, of Portland; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; and a granddaughter, Carrie Nowlin.

Memorials may be given in her name to a special charity of your choice.
