TERRE HAUTE — Charlotte Stuart Harker of Terre Haute, Indiana passed away on Saturday, November 2, 2013. She was born in Dubuque, Iowa to Charlotte Anna (Atkinson) Stuart and Bert Everett Stuart on April 23, 1923. She married Robert James Harker on April 14, 1945.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert; her son Robert Jeffery; and sisters June Campbell and Edith Norman. She is survived by her son Craig Stuart Harker, LtCol, USAF (Ret) and wife Gail (Boyer) Harker; daughter-in-law Linda (Rubush) Harker and grandchildren Lauren Rachel Harker and Ryan Jeffrey Harker of Indianapolis, and Matthew Ryan Harker of California, Sarah Elizabeth (Harker) Cox (Weston) of Florida, and Emily Ann (Harker) Smith (Thomas) of Virginia.

Charlotte received her BS Degree from Iowa State University and her MS and PhD from Purdue University in Food/Nutrition and Biochemistry. She taught at Indiana State University for 25 years retiring as Professor.

Dr. Harker was active in community activities as den mother for Cub Scouts, as President of the League of Women Voters and Secretary of the Cumulative Building Fund Committee for North and South High Schools.

She served the campus community as a member and secretary of the Faculty Senate and as chair or member of the Senate committees on Faculty Affairs, Promotions, and Administrative Affairs. She was a guest professor of Florida International University. She developed and secured accreditation for the dietetic curriculum at Indiana State University. She authored and co-authored scholarly articles and books on nutrition.

Her professional activities included Delegate, President and Secretary of the Indiana Dietetic Association, past President of the Indiana Nutrition Council, consultant to the Well Child Clinic and the Nutrition for the Elderly Programs, and to various masters programs in dietetics and accreditation teams.

She was a member of Mortar Board, Women's Chemistry Honorary, and Women in Science Honorary as well as Pi Beta Phi social sorority.

There will be no services. Her cremains will be interred in the Center Grove United Methodist Cemetery in Dubuque, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan & Hughes Funeral Home, 605 S. 25th Street.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Stuart Harker Scholarship at Indiana State University or to other charitable causes
