DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Elmer Burlage, 93, of Dyersville, formerly of Worthington, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2005, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Jerry Kopacek officiating. Lectors will be Amy Goerdt and Paula Burlage. Petitions will be read by Sharon Carr. Giftbearers will be Matthew Lansing, Jeni Burlage, Mitchell Burlage and Mason Burlage. Placing of the pall will be Julie Hosch and Anna Jane Meyer. Pallbearers will be Ted, Steve, Tyler, Brian and Willie Burlage, Larry Hosch, Mike Meyer and Andy Rinderknecht. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4:30 p.m.

He was born on May 27, 1912, in rural Worthington, son of Theodore and Sophia (May) Burlage. He received his education at St. Francis Xavier School in Dyersville.

He married Dorothy (Urbain) on Feb. 14, 1939, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Farley. The couple farmed for several years in the Dundee area and on a farm near Worthington, in Dodge Township, until retirement.

He was an active member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in Worthington.

Elmer took great pleasure in working the land and caring for his livestock.

He was inducted into the Dubuque County Cattlemen Hall of Fame in 2001.

When it was time to enjoy his family and friends, you would find him playing cards. He also enjoyed bowling, as well as a good ball game, whether it was his sons, grandchildren, the local town teams or the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was a devoted father and husband of 66 years to his wife, Dorothy.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy, of Dyersville; five daughters, Julie Hosch, of Cascade, Anna Jane Meyer, of Grand Haven, Mich., Betty Burlage, of Chicago, Lois (Keith) Rinderknecht, of Ham Lake, Minn., and Karen (Tim) Nefzger, of Dyersville; three sons, Ed (Mary Lou) Burlage, of Farley, and Joe (Helen) Burlage and Tom (Lois) Burlage, both of Worthington; 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene (Andy) Hostert; a brother, Don (Mickey) Burlage, of Worthington; three sisters-in-law, Odeil (Anselm) Willenborg, Gertrude Urbain and Dorothy Urbain; and a brother-in-law, Ray Urbain.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Frederick Meyer; a son-in-law, John Hosch; four sisters, Ida (Lavern) Engler, Lucille (Emil) White and Florence and Mildred Burlage; and two brothers, Lester and Lawrence (Frances) Burlage.
