HOLY CROSS, Iowa - Louis P. Hayes, 92, of Holy Cross, died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at home, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Zinkula officiating. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Scherrman-Peterson American Legion Post 656. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Holy Cross, where there will be a parish scripture service at 3 p.m., and where members of the Scherrman-Peterson American Legion Post 656 will gather at 6 p.m.

Mr. Hayes owned and operated the Holy Cross Locker until his retirement in 1983.

He was born on Jan. 6, 1913, in Holy Cross, son of Edward and Catherine (Ellerbach) Hayes. He married Ruth (Feltes) on May 30, 1949, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He was educated in Holy Cross School and enlisted in the Navy as a radio operator in November 1942.

He was a retired member of the Holy Cross Fire Department and was a past member of the city council and the Holy Cross Athletic Club. He was an active member of the Holy Name Society, the Catholic Order of Foresters Holy Cross Court 881, the Farley (Iowa) Knights of Columbus Council and the Farley American Legion.

He was selected as the first Holy Cross Citizen of the Year in 1985.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth, of Holy Cross; two sons, Bob (Sherry) Hayes, of Holy Cross, and Tim (Ann) Hayes, of Dubuque; five grandchildren, Brian, Marty, Mike, Sarah and Lisa Hayes; a brother, Clem Hayes, of Dubuque; a sister, Viola (Olie) Avery, of Dubuque; and a sister-in-law, Joan Hayes, of Saint Catherine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Virgil Hayes; and five sisters, Delia Duster, Genevieve Duster, Evalina Schultz, Frances Clemen and Clara Klaren.
