Raymond W. Merfeld, 85, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of the Monticello area, passed away Wednesday, March 30, 2005, in his home after a long illness. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m Tuesday at Kramer Funeral Home, Monticello. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Monsignor Albert Manternach officiating. Burial: St. Paul Cemetery, Worthington, with military honors conducted by the Monticello Drill Team.

Raymond was born Feb. 12, 1920, in Worthington, the son of Jacob and Josephine Belser Merfeld. He served his country from 1942 to 1945 in the Army Air Corps as a mechanic during the Battle of the Bulge. His tour included time in France, England and Africa.

Raymond married Maj. Olsson in Las Vegas on May 1, 1992. He worked at John Deere in Dubuque before moving to Florida, where he was a mechanic with the Clearwater Airport until his retirement. He enjoyed repairing musical instruments, traveling and camping.

Survivors include his wife, Maj; a stepson, Roger Meyers of Tunarosa, Mexico; two sisters, Dolly (John) Janssen of Monticello and Loretta Brown of Edgewood; a brother, Albert (Wilma) Merfeld of Monticello; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marie Miller; three brothers, Henry, Nick and Lester; and a sister, Martha, in infancy.
