Bertha McDermott, 96, of Stonehill Care Center, Dubuque, formerly of Dyersville, Iowa, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at the care center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4:30 p.m.

She was born on Dec. 4, 1908, in Washington Township, Dubuque County, daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Fitzgibbons) Burns.

She married Harold McDermott on June 25, 1934, at St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque. They owned and operated the Model Hatchery and Feed Store in Dyersville from 1953 to 1982. Harold died in 1975.

Bertha enjoyed traveling and playing cards with family and friends.

Surviving are three daughters, Marilyn (Elmer) Hentges and Mary (Timothy) Showalter, both of Dyersville, and Kathleen (Richard) Brown, of Naples, Fla.; a son, Delbert (Barbara) McDermott, of Carroll, Iowa; 14 grandchildren, William and Bruce Hentges, Michael Evans, Jennifer Morris, Michael McDermott, Michelle Meyer, Meg Schoeppner, Mitch McDermott, Maureen Rupiper, Matthew and Maria McDermott, Heather Showalter, Bridget Pudi and Joshua Showalter; and 24 great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Cox, Sister Mary Patricia Burns, Katherine Lyons and a sister in infancy; and two brothers, Daniel and Jerry Burns.
