DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Robert J. Ertl, 72, of Dyersville, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville, following a courageous battle with prostate cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 137. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m., and an American Legion Service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Ertl was employed in the family business, The Ertl (toy) Co., which was originated by his parents, as director of manufacturing for 47 years, until his retirement in 1992.

He was born on Oct. 23, 1932, in Dubuque, son of Fred F. Sr. and Gertrude (Sauser) Ertl. He married Darlene Helen Straub on May 5, 1956, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He was a Korean War veteran.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 137; St. Francis Xavier Basilica, where he served as an usher and on the parish financial board; the American Bowling Congress; and the Dyersville Men's Bowling Association Hall of Fame.

His interests included farming, golfing, cards, bowling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Darlene; two daughters, Karolyn (Steve) Olberding and Krisanne (fiance, Kelly Kluesner) Ertl, both of Dyersville; three sons, Karl (Pam) and Daniel (friend, Wendy Adams), both of Estes Park, Colo., and David (Becky), of Cascade; nine grandchildren, Dawn and Jeremy Olberding, Steven, Matthew and Elizabeth Ertl, Jarrett and Samuel Ertl and Ryan and Alex Funke; four brothers, Fred F. (Nancy) Ertl Jr., of Peosta, Joseph (Helen) Ertl and Allan (Susan) Ertl, both of Dyersville, and John (Pat) Ertl, of Guttenberg; a sister, Carol (Mike) Lundergan, of Dyersville; two aunts, Theresa and Mary Sauser, both of Dubuque; and a brother-in-law, Harold H. (friend, Kay Hoppmann) Straub.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Stefanie Olberding; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Straub; and a brother-in-law, Loras Benn.
