DYERSVILLE, Iowa - Ernest J. Offermann, 64, of Dyersville, died Wednesday afternoon, May 19, 2004, at home, as the result of a farm accident.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Monsignor Ed Petty officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

He served in the Iowa National Guard in 1959.

He was born on Nov. 19, 1939, in Worthington, son of Alfred and Malvina (Bonert) Offermann.

He married Doris Dunkel on Sept. 29, 1962, in Dyersville. Together they farmed northwest of Dyersville.

Ernie also did welding at S&R Mfg. in Earlville. He was currently developing Scenic Hill Terrace, a subdivision on his land. In addition to that, he loved to spend some time lending a helping hand to anyone who needed it, farming both crops and hogs, hunting and fishing with his grandchildren, fixing things, mowing his lawn and having coffee at Farmers Shipping.

Surviving are his wife, Doris; two sons, Steve (Vicki) Offermann, of Urbandale, and Jason (Cindy) Offermann, of Guttenberg; two daughters, Kate (Larry) Steffensmeier, of Dyersville, and Tammy (Mark) Angen, of Cedar Falls; seven+ grandchildren, Jessica Offermann, Lindsay Ducker, Alesha, Sophie and Kolbey Steffensmeier, Connor Offermann, Emma Angen and a child due in August; three sisters, Norma Stevens, of Monticello, Lois (James) Jasper, of Peosta, and Theresa (Al) Merkes, of Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Doris Offermann, of Earlville; his mother-in-law, Lorraine Dunkel; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Marylin (Leon) Kern, of New Vienna, Diane (Robert) Recker, of Hopkinton, John (Karen) Dunkel, of Dubuque, Tom (Janine) Dunkel, Paul (Sue) Dunkel and Karen (Dennis) Nurre, all of Dyersville, and Pat (Ann) Dunkel, of Worthington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Leon; a step grandson, Austin Gerner; and his father-in-law, James Dunkel.
