Vera V. Holzhammer Dowdy, 91, of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015. A private burial service will be Wednesday, May 27, at Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Leonard Funeral Home and Crematory, 2595

Rockdale Rd., Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

Vera was born June 27, 1923, in Bellevue, Iowa, daughter of John H. and Matilda M. (Wagner) Mootz. She married Cpl. Edward W. Holzhammer on Jan. 13, 1944; he preceded her in death. Vera married Chief Petty Officer Carlos R. Dowdy on Dec. 11, 1965. He preceded her in death on Feb. 18, 2001.

Surviving are her daughters, Carole (Mike) Wiegand of Anamosa, Paula (David) Chapin of Galena, Ill., and Kay (Dick) Sisler of Dubuque; a stepdaughter, Vicki (Joey) Daniels of Wanchese, N.C.; a brother, Robert (Kristin Novak) Mootz of Cedar Rapids; a sister-in-law, Esther Mootz of Platteville, Wis.; a grand-daughter, Nicole Lehman Kleppe, and great-grand-daughter, Alyssa Kleppe; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Donald and Glenn Mootz; sister, Irma Seda; brother-in-law, C.J. Seda; sisters-in-law, Eva Mootz and Millie Robbins; and a son, Randall E. (Randy) Holzhammer, on Aug. 13, 2000.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Community Foundation/Flower Fund for Grandview Avenue, c/o Premier Bank, 2625 NW Arterial Rd., Dubuque, IA 52002.
