Carlos Russell Dowdy, 73, of 376 S. Grandview Ave., died following a brief illness at 7:01 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque.

He was born on March 9, 1927, in Virginia Beach, Va., son of Carlos C. and Mary E. (Midgett) Dowdy. He married Vera V. (Mootz) Holzhammer on Dec. 7, 1965.

He grew up in the Kitty Hawk, N.C., area. He served for 20 years with the Coast Guard, retiring July 1, 1967, as a Chief Petty Officer.

His love for the water led him to piloting vessels on the Mississippi River for many years after his retirement. Included in his endeavors were piloting the Mary for Newt Marine, the River Rogue and the Spirit of Dubuque for Robert's River Rides, the Island Princess and the Cassville Ferry.

He will be dearly missed by his family.

Surviving are his wife, Vera; a daughter, Vicki (Joey) Daniels, of Wanchese, N.C.; stepdaughters, Carol (Michael) Wiegand, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Paula (David) Chapin, of Galena, Ill., and Kay (Dick) Sisler, of Dubuque; a sister, Shirley (Bill) Toler, of Havelock, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a stepson, Randy E. Holzhammer, on Aug. 13, 2000.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for beautification of the riverfront, in care of Vera Dowdy.
