Dorothy Catherine (Smith) Berendes, 85, of Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of 202 East Main St., Shullsburg, Wis., died at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2005, at Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill., where friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens. Memorial services will be at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Shullsburg, Wis., at a later date.

She was born on Nov. 25, 1919, in Fairplay, Wis., daughter of Lucian and Catherine (Welter) Smith.

She married Budd Otto Berendes on Sept. 11, 1943, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Sinsinawa, Wis.; he preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 1992.

She was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Shullsburg, and a member of McCann-Richard American Legion Auxiliary Post 105, of Shullsburg.

She was an avid fisherman, and loved to play cards and work crossword puzzles. You could find her most often either attending to her garden or her flowers.

Surviving are three children, Cathy Umscheid, of Hudson, Iowa, Robert Berendes, of Couderay, Wis., Blaine Berendes, of Shullsburg; a special member of the family, a cousin, Terry (Ida) Vosberg, of Stoughton, Wis.; five grandchildren, Donna Hirsch, of Dubuque, Robert Umscheid, of Waterloo, Iowa, Leah (Andy) Newman, of Albert Lea, Minn, Emily Berendes, of Madison, Wis., and Jay (Jennifer Popp) Berendes, of Shullsburg; two great-grandchildren, Cody Gesie, of Dubuque, and Jacob Berendes, of Shullsburg; two brothers, William (Shirley) Smith, of East Dubuque, Alfred (Mae) Smith, of Freeport, Ill.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth (Eugene) Smith, of Fairplay.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an older brother, in infancy; a brother, Eugene Smith; and a sister, Lorayne (Bosberg) Snider.

Memorials may be given to Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center and Hospice of Dubuque.

On behalf of Dorothy, our family would like to thank the staff of Dubuque Nursing and Rehab center for the love and care each of you gave Dorothy during the past five years. Your kindness and love will never be forgotten.
