William C. "Doc" Ward 1926-2014

William C. "Doc" Ward, 87, of Dubuque, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2014, at Stonehill Care Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 3, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. Burial will follow in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by Dubuque American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory.

He was born on Aug. 19, 1926, in Dubuque, son of James and Lena (Oswald) Ward. He married Helen L. Miller on Friday, Aug. 13, 1954.

Doc served in the Army from Nov. 25, 1944, to Nov. 11, 1946, and was very proud of his service to his country .

He retired from the Dubuque Packing Company in his early '50s and spent his retirement years in Las Vegas.

He was a member of Dubuque American Legion Post 6 and UFCW Local 150A.

Doc enjoyed walking and visiting with people at the mall. He was a devoted husband and father and was especially fond of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; three children, Cynthia (Gary) Riniker, of Bernard, Iowa, William J. (Janet) Ward, of Tucson, Ariz., and Michael (Carol) Ward, of Lake Stevens, Wash.; three grandchildren; Leann (Michael) Pursell, of Tucson, Joseph (Angie) Riniker, of Beloit, Wis., and Lisa (Riniker) DeMoss, of Lost Nation, Iowa; five great-grandchildren, Maleah, Chasity and Grace Riniker, Kailee and Wyatt DeMoss; and two sisters, Marlene and Phyllis, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; several brothers and sisters; along with nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

The family wishes to thank Stonehill Care Center and their staff, especially Roxanne and Julie and to Hospice of Dubuque for all the wonderful care and kindness they gave to William.
