James "Jim" Strub, 77, of 2455 Woodlawn Street, died at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2007, Manor Care Health Services.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Resurrection Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Hauer officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, with full military rites accorded by American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

James was born on Jan. 12, 1930, in Lansing, Iowa, son of Clarence and Florence (Beck) Strub. Jim spent his first eight years of life in Lansing, before moving to Dubuque in 1938. He attended St. Columbkille, graduating in 1949, and went on to serve in the Army during the Korean conflict. James married Marie Lensing, in April of 1955. Upon her death, he went on to marry Ann L. Young, in December 1958, a marriage that lasted 41 years.

A life-long carpenter, James was a proud member of the Carpenters Local 678. He also was a founder of the scouting program at Resurrection School, a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, the American Legion Post 6, and a charter member of the John F. Kennedy Knights of Columbus Council 5513, where he held many offices including grand knight. It was with the latter organization that the following awards were bestowed upon him: Family of the year, 1995; state bowling hall of fame inductee, 2001, and Iowa Knight of the year, 2002.

In his free time, James enjoyed camping at Leisure Lake with his family and friends and playing cards with various groups around town.

Surviving are his children, Douglas (Pat) Strub, of Hallsville, Mo., Patricia Strub, of Onalaska, Wis., Debra (Rick) Fishnick, of Dubuque, Judith (Dennis) Herrig, of Tulsa, Okla., and John (Lori) Strub, of Dubuque; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mabel Hartmann, of Dubuque; a sister-in-law, Betty Young, of Shreveport, La.; two nieces and a nephew; family friend Doris Meyer; and confidant Josephine Foley.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wives, Marie and Ann.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Knights of Columbus, Council 5513, 7270 Sundown Road, Box 2, Peosta, IA 52068.

A special thank you to Jim's sister Mabel Hartmann and niece Jane (Joe) Bowerman and their four children who were like grandchildren to him, for all their constant care since Ann passed away in 2000.
