Richard J. "Dick" Schroeder Sr., 70, of 1381 Oak Park Place, No. 108, formerly of 1225 Rockdale Road, died at 8:45 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, 2008, at ManorCare Health Services of natural causes after a long illness.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on July 15, 1938, son of George N. and Ruth M. (Hoell) Schroeder.

Dick moved to Gary, Ind., in 1959. He enlisted in the Navy and served upon the USS Capricornus AKA-57. He served in the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean Sea. After release of duty, he worked in a steel mill in Gary. Then he moved to Dubuque.

Dick worked for Celotex for 19 years, then joined the staff at Dubuque Stephen Hempstead High School as a custodian, where he retired after 17 years. Dick also delivered telephone books for Qwest for 20 years.

He was an avid Elvis fan. He had more Elvis memorabilia than it was thought could be possible. He also loved to fish in the summer.

Surviving are his children, Richard (Machelle) Schroeder Jr., of Platteville, Wis., and Brenda Henry, of Dubuque; a stepson, Richard Hoell, of Dubuque; a nephew, Robert Schroeder, of California; two grandchildren, Ryan Schroeder and Chelsee Henry; and two stepgrandchildren, Kali and Trevor Hoell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and only sister, Virginia Hentges.

A Richard J. "Dick" Schroeder Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to offer thanks to Dr. Liaboe, Dr. Schope and the nurses and Finley Hospital for their care and concern these past years. Also, a special thanks to the staff and residents of Oak Park Place. You have made his last few years enjoyable. He really cherished the friendships he made there.
