BERNARD, Iowa - Robert Raymond "Bob" Gross, 67, of 23209 Lakeshore Drive, at Leisure Lake, Bernard, died at 12:07 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2014, at home surrounded by his family.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, July 29, at the Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road. A graveside committal service with military honors by the Dubuque Marine Corps League and the Tri-State Vietnam Veterans will immediately follow at Dubuque Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Bob was born in Monticello, on March 31, 1947, son of Raymond and Virginia (Their) Gross. He attended Dubuque Senior High School before enlisting in the Marine Corps. Bob married Jean Lanser and later married Linda LaBarge in 2010.

From 1964 to 1968, Bob served in the Marines during the Vietnam War. He served with honor and received many medals and citations, including the Purple Heart, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Vietnam Campaign Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He continued to live his life with honor and valor until the day he passed, under the motto "Once a Marine, Always a Marine, OOH RAH."

After his service to his country, he worked at the former Dubuque Packing Co., and the Metz Bakery. He also owned the Sport Page. He was an active resident at Leisure Lake and proudly served as president of the Leisure Lake Property Owners Association for five years. He also was a member of the Dubuque Boat Club, Elks Lodge 297 and the UFCW Local 150 A.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman who spent his early years hunting, fishing and playing softball. Bob was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who served as a father-figure to his children Ashley and Austin. He will be sadly missed by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; and his former wife of 34 years, Jean Lanser, and their children, Karrie (Brian Stephan) Gross and Brian (Julie) Gross; his grandchildren, Ashley, Austin, Ashtin, Sophia, Adam, Alex and Aaron; a great-grandchild, Jaxson; and his brother, Bill Gross.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his longtime friend and mother-in-law, Jeanette Lanser; a brother, Patrick Gross; sister, Mary Gross; and his Marine Corps Comrades, especially those from his platoon who died in Vietnam.

The family request no flowers.

Thank you to the health care professionals who cared for Bob, especially Drs. Sullivan, Holm and Magnus and Hospice of Dubuque.
