Kenneth E. Dieters, 78, of Ennoble Manor Care Center, formerly of 506 E. 22nd St., died at 6:55 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at the care center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Visitation was held from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there was a parish wake service at 2 p.m.

Mr. Dieters was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works for 29 years, retiring in 1983.

He was born on March 3, 1926, in Platteville, Wis., son of Ernest H. and Grethel (Burton) Dieters. He married Edith B. Block on June 10, 1950, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He served with the Army during World War II in the Philippines. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained.

He was a member and past commander of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6, where he was past commander of the Funeral Detail. He also was a member and past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9663 and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish.

Ken volunteered his time to drive the veterans to their appointments in Iowa City.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

His greatest joy was to be with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Edith B. Dieters; five daughters, Sharon A. (Don) Johnson, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Patricia J. (Bob) Arensdorf, Barb J. (fiance, Paul Kass) Borovic, Judy L. (Steve) Davis and Lynn M. (Bill) Murphy, all of Dubuque; three sons, Gary A. (DiAnn) Dieters, Dennis G. (Pat) Dieters and Kenny E. Dieters Jr., all of Dubuque; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Clifford Dieters, of Marshalltown, Iowa, Maynard (Mary Ann) Dieters, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Dale (Carol) Dieters, of Dubuque; two sisters, Eileen (Gene) Weidenbacher, of Phoenix, and Ruth (Gene) Motsch, of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Merle, in infancy; and two grandchildren, Jennifer Davis and Anthony Dieters.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Ennoble Manor and Hospice of Dubuque for their care and concern for Ken and the family.
