William R. Schmit, 65, of 1625 Scenic View Drive, died of natural causes Wednesday morning, July 7, 1999, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with burial in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 3:30 p.m.

Mr. Schmit worked at John Deere Dubuque Works, retiring in 1986.

He was born on Aug. 22, 1933, in Dubuque, son of Henry J. and Myrtle (Gross) Schmit. He married Mary Lou Neuhaus on Sept. 8, 1956, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, Iowa.

He was a Korean conflict Army veteran. He was a member of St. Columbkille's Parish, John Deere Supervisor's Club and the John Deere "I" Club. He also was a member of the Dubuque Kiwanis Hall of Fame and the Dubuque Fast Pitch Hall of Fame. He was active in fast pitch softball for many years and was on several tournament teams. He especially enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. In his later years, he enjoyed a good game of cards with his friends.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Schmit; three daughters, Dianne M. (Daniel) Cavanaugh, of West Bend, Wis., and Cindy L. Schadler and Julie A. (Philip) Roos, both of Dubuque; three sons, Gary J. (Tammy) Schmit, William M. Schmit and Terry J. Kimberly Schmit, all of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren; and a brother, Ray (Lucida) Schmit, of Dubuque.

A William R. Schmit Memorial Fund has been established.
