HANOVER, Ill. - Michael L. Cook, 67, of Hanover, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at Midwest Medical Center, Galena, Ill.

Service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Hanover, with the Rev. Ken Matthews of United Methodist Church, Hanover, officiating. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, at the funeral home.

Mr. Cook worked in communications for the Savanna Army Depot until retiring in 1993.

He was born on Dec. 5, 1940, in southern Illinois, son of Roy and Jessie (Franklin) Cook. He married Rita Starr on Feb. 20, 1983, in Hanover.

Mike attended high school in Edgemont, S.D., graduating with the class of 1959. Upon graduation from high school, Mike served his country in the Navy for eight years and continued to serve in the Naval Reserves until 1976.

He served on the Hanover Zoning Board and was a member of the Hanover Fire Department for 40 years. Mike was a lifetime member of the Hanover Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the National Rifle Association.

Mike enjoyed fishing and hunting, especially whitetail deer. He also enjoyed playing euchre, taking pictures and was an avid Minnesota Vikings and St. Louis Cardinals fan. Most of all, Mike loved spending time with his family and friends.

Surviving are his wife, Rita, of Hanover; four stepsons, Rod (Laura) Diestelmeier, of Wister, Okla., Rick (Connie) Diestelmeier, of Savanna, Raymie (Tracy) Diestelmeier, of Elizabeth, and Robin (Deb) Diestelmeier, of Savanna; two stepdaughters, Roxann Schultz, of Lena, and Renee Hastings, of Stockton; 18 step-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; a brother, Don (Teody) Cook, of Seoul, Korea; his mother-in-law, Golda Starr, of Stockton; a brother-in-law, Keith (Carole) Starr, of Stockton; eight nieces; and a nephew .

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Memorial Fund has been established in Mike's memory.
