The Clinton Herald Thursday June 24, 1880 p. 3

The sad announcement of the death of Mr. Thomas Adams came by telegram to his son-in-law, Mr. J.J. Flournoy, this morning, the news soon spreading throughout the city and creating a deep and general feeling of sorrow. Mr. Adams has been a prominent resident of Clinton for many years, being most of the time General Superintendent for Iowa of the American Express company, latterly its agent here, combining therewith for several terms the duties of City Treasurer, both of which positions he held at his death. No citizen stood higher in the estimation of the public, and no man was more esteemed for his sterling integrity, business ability and honorable principles than Thomas Adams. His death occurred at two o'clock this morning at Bath, Long Island, whither he had gone on a visit to relatives and where he was surrounded by many who took a loving interest in his welfare. He was about 55 years of age. The remains will probably be brought here for burial, further telegraphic advices awaited here. Mrs. Adams and her eldest son Thomas W. were at the death-bed of deceased. Fred, the second son, was in Chicago, and Randolph and Agnes [Mrs. Flournoy], the other children, are here. The vacancy in the office of City Treasurer will be filled by the Council, until the next municipal election, as provided by the State law.
