Miss Elizabeth J. McLaughlin died yesterday morning at half past 10 o’clock at the family residence on Bluff, between Second and Third Streets. She had been sick for some time, and last Tuesday was prepared for death. In the meantime she rallied and seemed to improve for somewhat, but commenced to sink rapidly Friday and expired As stated above. During the last few days she was unconscious some times but did not appear to suffer much.
Miss McLaughlin was the only surviving daughter of James N. and Bridget McLaughlin, and a sister of Father E. J. McLaughlin, the beloved pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Clinton. The family telegraphed Friday night for Father McLaughlin but he did not receive the message until Saturday morning, too late to catch the train, and did not arrive until last night. Miss McLaughlin was born Ireland, removing to this country and Dubuque while still very young. She received her education here, and afterwards taught in the First Ward School, teaching also for a time in the schools in Clinton, where she resided with her brother, Rev. E. J. McLaughlin, deceased. Miss McLaughlin was very well known and universally loved and respected for her many noble qualities of head and heart. A most exemplary and devout Christian. She will be missed by many who benefitted by her example. Her charity and kindness endeared her to all, and her untimely death will be deeply mourned by all who knew here. Funeral notice elsewhere.
