1946-2017
Richard L. “Dick” Osterberger, 71 of Dubuque, Iowa passed away on Thursday, March 23rd, 2017 at home.
Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 28th at the Church of the Nativity where a rosary will be recited before mass. Rev. Msgr. James Miller, officiating, Rev. John O’Connor, homilist, along with concelebrating priest of the Archdiocese. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 27th at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where a wake service will be at 2:45 p.m.
Dick was born on January 15, 1946 the son of Jake and Millie (Ward) Osterberger. He married Rita Welter, December 30th, 1967 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He attended Nativity grade school, graduated from Wahlert High School, and received his Master’s Degree from Loras College in School Administration.
He began his teaching career at Holy Ghost Catholic Grade School and later at Wahlert High School, where he was Vice Principal, Dean of Students, coached football and track. In his later years, he worked in sales and as a relator for American Realty.
He was a lifelong member at the Church of the Nativity, where he was an altar server and served on the parish council. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 510, and volunteered many hours at Albrecht Acres. He enjoyed spending time with his Squires Club Buddies.
Dick loved family gatherings and would usually be found by the grill. He was very proud of his family, especially his grandchildren and loved attending their events.
He is survived by his wife Rita; three children Steve (Lisa) Osterberger, Jeff (Amy) Osterberger, both of Dubuque, Julie (Chris) Bracey, of Chicago, IL; seven grandchildren; Alli, Bryce, Kaylee and Ellie Osterberger; Ava, Niyah, and Nathan Bracey. His siblings, Dave (Karen) Osterberger, Jim Osterberger and Ann (Steve) Seamer, all of Dubuque; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean (Mike) Vance, Laura (Jim) Miller, David (Dawn) Welter, along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law, Marguerite and Herbert Welter and a special aunt Nan.
In lieu of flowers a memorial scholarship will be established for a student attending Wahlert Catholic High School.
