Mary Jo Kiernan, 61, of 9451 Laudville Road, died Saturday, July 6, 2013, at home following a long illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Melleray, rural Peosta, with the Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where there will be a parish wake service at 2:45 p.m.

She was born on Aug. 10, 1951, in Dubuque, daughter of Joseph P. and Angela (McCarthy) Kane. She married James "Jay" Kiernan on Oct. 16, 1971, at St. Joseph's on the Prairie.

She graduated from Capri Cosmetology College and worked at the Dubuque Regional Airport for many years, lastly with Blue Skies Over Dubuque, as their office manager.

In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, quilting and gardening, but mostly enjoyed her time with family and friends. She always put others first and never forgot a birthday or special occasion. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are her husband, Jay; children, Christine Geers, Jayme (Tracy) Kiernan and Keith (Angie) Kiernan, all of Dubuque, and Bob (Kathy) Kiernan, of Dyersville, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; her siblings, Shirley (Glenn) Sieverding, of Bellevue, Iowa, Joyce (friend, Leon) Haudenshield, of Dubuque, Janet (John) Beireis, of Hillman, Minn., Dan (friend, Cheryl) Kane, of Galena, Ill., Marie (Jim) Balk, of Dubuque, Marty (Cindy) Kane, of Ringsted, Iowa, Mike (friend, Margie) Kane, of Dubuque, Linda (Clarence) Hoftender, of Galena, and Bill (Mary Kay) Kane, of Zwingle, Iowa; her uncles, Tom (Kaye) Kane and John Paul (Gracie) Kane; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, James Haudenshield

Mary Jo's family would like to thank all their neighbors, family and friends for their kindness, concern and help.
