James Allen, a pioneer resident of Dubuque, died at the family home, 18 Bluff Street, at 7:30 o;clock Sunday morning, after a brief illness.
Mr. Allen was born in Cleveland, Ohio, May 17, 1849. He was the son of John and Ann Allen. Who settled in Dubuque in 1850. On May 26, 1880, he married Jane Summers. The Rev. Garrett Nagle officiated at the ceremony which was held in St. Raphael's Cathedral. Last year the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
Mr. Allen was connected with the local police department for many years and later with the Dubuque Mattress factory.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Summers Allen; two sons, John J. and Louis H. of Dubuque; two daughters, Grace G. of Omaha, Nebr. and Sister Mary Immaculate, O. P. of Freeport, Ill.; two sisters, Mrs. Anna O'Dea, Chicago and Sister Mary Evangelista, Mercy Hospital, Cedar Rapids.
The funeral will be held from the family residence, 18 Bluff Street, to St. Raphael's Cathedral at 9 o'clock Tuesday morning where a solemn requiem mass will be celebrated by the Rev. J. B. Casey, rector. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
