Charles L. "Chuck" Egelhof, 86, of 1244 Finley St., passed away Monday, March 18, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road. Private family burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, where the Metropolitan Lodge 49 A.F. & A.M. will conduct a public Masonic Service at 7:45 p.m. Friends also may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

He was born on May 2, 1915, at the Finley Hospital, in Dubuque, son of Louis F. and Louise (Ragatz) Egelhof.

Chuck attended the University of Dubuque and graduated from the St. Louis Institute of Mortuary Science. He owned and operated Egelhof Funeral Home for more than 50 years. He was the third generation in the business that was initiated on Main Street by his grandfather, F. Louis Egelhof, who is remembered by his photography of early Dubuque.

Mr. Egelhof, "Chuck," was active in many community organizations. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. The Dubuque Boys & Girls Clubs, East Dubuque Lions Club, Dubuque Dock Commission, East Dubuque School Board and YM-YWCA were among his favorite activities. He also was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Club and an over 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge and a long time member of Dubuque High Twelve Club 119.

Chuck belonged to the Metropolitan Lodge 49 A.F. & A.M., a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Valley of Clinton, Orient of Iowa. A member of Chapter, Council, and Knights Templars of the York Rite of Freemasonry. A Noble of El Kahir Shrine Temple of Cedar Rapids and a member of Oxus Grotto.

Sports also were important. He was the Dubuque pingpong champion for many years and was among the initiators of the Dubuque Sports Bowl Stock Car Racing Association. He raced "Energy 1" under the name of "Digger O'Dell,". Boats, ATVs, motorcycles and ice racing occupied his free time. He was an avid bridge and poker player as well.

Surviving are his wife, Patt Dahlem Egelhof; three daughters, Zoe Ann (Robert) Casper, Linda (Jerry) Kenline and Barbara Lorraine Egelhof; three stepchildren, Patrick (Pam) Chesterman, Tamara Holmes and Randy Chesterman; six grandchildren, Steven Casper, Liza Casper Clark, James Kenline, Jeff Kenline, Megan Kenline Schiltz and Tracy Chesterman; six great-grandchildren, Natalie and Madeleine Clark, Colin, Emma and Lily Kenline and Kaylin Schiltz; and also surviving are the Louis Fautsch niece and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Cassidy Egelhof; his parents; his brother, David; and his sister, Lorraine (Louis) Fautsch.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to your favorite charity.

Chuck lived life to its very fullest - "his way."
