Marvin J. Schlitzer, 79, of Dubuque, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Hope Evangelical Free Church, 11893 Kennedy Road, with Pastor Matthew Collins officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the church. Egelhof, Siegert& Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

He was born on May 7, 1933, in Dubuque, son of Dayton and Elsie (Koethe) Schlitzer. He married Barbara Jagusch on June 12, 1954. That same year, Marvin was drafted into the Army and served until 1956.

He was a lifelong dairy farmer and had a passion for old cars, collecting 1958, 1959 and 1960 Oldsmobiles.

Marvin served on the board for Swiss Valley Farms for 29 years, 18 years as vice president. He also was a past board member of the National Milk Producers Federation, life member with the Dairy Shrine Club and held numerous offices at the local and state Farm Bureau. Marvin and his family received the first Outstanding Dairy Farm Family of Dubuque County in 1973. In 1987, he was awarded Wallaces Farmer Master Farmer Award.

Marvin loved the Lord and for years had a personal ministry of visiting and calling people to offer a word of encouragement. He loved his family, and nothing made him happier than seeing or talking to his grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara, of Dubuque; his children, Mark (Twila) Schlitzer, of Dubuque, Susan Plum, of Pueblo, Colo., and Laurie (Gordon) Bieri, of Davenport, Iowa; his grandchildren, Beth (Tyler) Coon, of West Des Moines, Luke (Jackie) Schlitzer, of Grimes, Cole Schlitzer, of Dubuque, and Jenna Bieri, of Ames; his brother, Lloyd (Lana) Schlitzer, of Bennett; his brother-in-law, Kenneth Tscharner, of Dubuque; and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Schlitzer, of Evansville, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Rose Tscharner; and his brother, John Schlitzer.

Memorials may be given to Hope Evangelical Free Church and the American Heart Association.
