David A. Schumacher 1932-2002

David A. Schumacher, 69, of 1211 Lincoln Ave., died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at home, surrounded by his family, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Schumacher was a sheet metal worker and superintendent/estimator at Giese Sheet Metal for 44 years, retiring in 1994.

He was born on Sept. 21, 1932, in Dubuque, son of Joseph H. and Irma L. (Gerken) Schumacher. He married Patricia Jochum on July 24, 1954, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

He served in the Army in Germany.

He was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. He also was a member of American Legion Dubuque Post 6, the Dubuque Boat Club and Sheet Metal Union Local 91.

He was a lifelong resident of Dubuque, where he was very well liked by all who knew him. He was an avid Chicago Bears fan. He also enjoyed playing cards, bowling, fishing and travel. Most of all, Dave was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia; two daughters, Sharon (Lance) Hoefflin, of Austin, Minn., and Beth (Tom) Potts, of Waukee, Iowa; three sons, Peter Schumacher, Dan (Mary Beth) Schumacher and Paul (fiancee, Angie Kruser) Schumacher, all of Dubuque; nine grandchildren, Daniel, Jason and Sara Schumacher, Jenna, Troy and Luke Hoefflin, Gabriel Schumacher and Brandon and Morgan Potts; three sisters, Sylveria (Nick) Pauly, Marian Frederick and Doris Hanten, all of Dubuque; and two brothers, Joseph (Vera) Schumacher and Francis (Ethel) Schumacher, both of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Walter, Erwin and Charles, and an infant brother, Louis; and a sister, Sister Mary Irma, OSF.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Dubuque and Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially the three Barbs and Lynn. Also a special thanks to Pat's sister, Dorothy Reed, for all her love and support through such a difficult time.
