Charles E. Schumacher, 75, of 801 Davis, Apt. G, formerly of 2755 Muscatine, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, surrounded by his children, at Ennoble Manor Care Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a wake service at 3 p.m.

Mr. Schumacher retired from Georgia Pacific in 1988, after 35 years of service.

He was born on May 28, 1926, in Adrian, Minn., son of Joseph and Irma (Gerken) Schumacher. He married Bernice Fangman on June 14, 1947, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church; she died on May 27, 2000.

He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, a member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6 and a proud member of Society of 40 Men/8 Horses, Voiture 632 of Dubuque County, having served as Chef-de-Gare. Past Chef and members of Voiture 632 will attend at 7:15 p.m. in body.

He also was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church, where he was a Mass server and usher. He was an avid bowler.

Surviving are three sons, Charles (Maryanne) Schumacher Jr. and Philip (Karen) Schumacher, both of Dubuque, and Steven (Sharon) Schumacher, of Hazel Green, Wis.; four daughters, Bette Jo (Dave) Merkes, of Worthington, Iowa, Karen (Randy) Foht, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Linda (Paul) Streit, of Hiawatha, Iowa, and Susan (Brian) Pregler, of Dubuque; 16 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; three brothers, Joe (Vera) Schumacher, Fran (Ethel) Schumacher and Dave (Pat) Schumacher, all of Dubuque; and three sisters, Sally (Nick) Pauly, Marian Frederick and Doris Hanten, all of Dubuque.

He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Erv Schumacher, and a sister, Sister Irma Schumacher.

A Charles Schumacher Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank Barb K. and the entire staff at Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care.
