Sylveria "Sally" Hird Pauly, 92, of Luther Manor, formerly of 3351 Kimberly Drive, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007, at Luther Manor.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m.

Monday at Resurrection Catholic Church with burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road.

She was born on Dec. 14, 1914, in Adrian, Minn., daughter of Joseph and Irma (Gerken) Schumacher.

As a child, Sally grew up in Adrian, moving to Dubuque at age 12.

She was a woman with many interests and talents.

She married Vincent E. Hird on April 14, 1947, in Galena, Ill.; he preceded her in death on Feb. 19, 1981. She later married Colford (Nick) Pauly on Jan. 26, 1989; he preceded her in death on April 27, 2005.

She was a devoted mother to her family and a wonderful friend to everyone. Sally was a woman with a true strength of character, wonderful sense of humor, and was a great storyteller. She was ahead of her time. A staunch Democrat, she was very open-minded and accepting of others and did not pass judgement. Sally voted for the Democrats 19 times throughout her life, starting with Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

She enjoyed bowling, traveling, horticulture, quilting, playing games and cards, excelling at Trivial Pursuit, doing crossword puzzles and reading.

Even though Sally's education only went through the eighth grade, she was extremely intelligent. Sally would read anything that she could get her hands on. She believed that you should leave no book unread.

A very creative woman, she gave away many quilts that she had crafted with love.

She was a long-time member of both Sacred Heart and Resurrection Catholic Church, where she volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister and money counter. Her life was blessed with three families.

Surviving are her children, Susan (Ray "Butch") Hird Pregler, Mary Ellen (Kevin) Timbs, Gerald (Marlene) Hird, Vincent A. (Wendy) Hird, Gary (Lorrie) Hird, Michael (Karen) Pauly, William (Deb) Pauly, Lawrence (Wendy) Pauly and Phillip (Jean) Pauly; many wonderful grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marian Frederick and Doris Hanten; two brothers, Joseph (Vera) Schumacher and Francis (Ethel) Schumacher; a sister-in-law, Patricia Schumacher and Jane Pauly Butt; a son-in-law, Vern Maury; a daughter-in-law, Mona White; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by three children, Ardelle Maury, Margaret Hird and Timothy Hird; four brothers, Walter, Irwin, Charles and David Schumacher; and a sister, Irma Schumacher OSF.

A memorial fund has been established in Sally's name.

Online condolences may be sent to info@egelhofsiegert casper.com.

The family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Sally's friends at Luther Manor and the Hospice of Dubuque
