C. N. "Nick" Pauly, 91, of Heritage Manor, formerly of 3351 Kimberly Drive, died Tuesday morning, April 26, 2005, at Heritage Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Resurrection Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road.

He was born on Feb. 22, 1914, in Dubuque, son of Nicholas and Josephine (Kelly) Pauly. He graduated from Columbia (Loras) Academy in 1931.

He married Ruth Elynor Hoffman on Nov. 25, 1937, in Davenport, Iowa; she died on Feb. 23, 1987. He later married Sylveria "Sally" Schumacher Hird on Jan. 26, 1989, in Dubuque.

As a young man, he delivered milk for Model Dairy in Davenport. He also worked for Rhomberg Furriers in Dubuque. He was co-owner and worked at Pauly Printing Co. for more than 25 years. He later worked for Hoermann Press and Union-Hoermann Press before retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Typographical Union.

Nick was widely respected as a bowler and a baseball umpire. He was inducted into the Iowa Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1977. He also was a member of the Dubuque Bowling Association Hall of Fame, the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame and the Dubuque Bowling 700 Club. He was president of the Iowa Bowling Association in 1973-1974. He held many offices in the Dubuque Bowling Association, the 700 Club and local bowling leagues. He also worked with the Junior Bowling program. He bowled in 52 consecutive state tournaments from 1948 to 1999.

He umpired baseball games in the Dubuque area for three decades and served as dispatcher for the Dubuque Umpires Association on several occasions. He was called on to fill in as a minor league umpire several times for the Dubuque Packers Class D professional baseball organization.

Nick was a people person who was blessed with many friends whom he made feel comfortable around him with his wit. He loved word play, jokes and puns. One of his greatest gifts was making people smile and laugh, and he channeled that blessing into a "jolly old St. Nick" mode as Santa Claus to many area children and their families.

Surviving are his wife; four sons, Michael (Karen), of rural Winterset, Iowa, William (Deborah), of Dubuque, Lawrence (Wendy), of Peosta, and Philip (Jean), of Junction City, Kan.; two stepdaughters, Susan Hird (Ray) Pregler, of St. Catherine, Iowa, and Mary Ellen Hird (Kevin) Timbs, of Iowa City; three stepsons, Gerald "Buzz" (Marlene) Hird, of Dubuque, Vincent (Wendy) Hird, of Mesquite, Nev., and Gary (Lori) Hird, of Wichita, Kan.; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 14 step grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Margaret Grace and Jane Butt, both of Dubuque, and Rita Ranson, of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Elynor Hoffman Pauly; his parents; three sisters, Mary Neyens Frick, Dorothy Smith and Rose Timpe; and a grandson, Christopher Raymond Pauly.

Memorials may be given to the Arthritis Foundation and Resurrection Catholic Church.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the wonderful nurses and staff at Heritage Manor.
