J. W. Dick, one of the most widely known citizens of Dubuque died at his residence, 1165 Bluff Street, early this morning. Deceased had been ailing more a less for the past year, but not until six week ago was he compelled to take to his bed.

The news of the death spread rapidly and was heard with expressions of regret everywhere because deceased was one of the most popular and respected citizens in Dubuque. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon.

J. W. Dick was born in Bosenbach, Bavaria, Germany, Nov. 6, 1834. Until 18-4 he resided in his native town, then he sailed for America reaching New York in December.

For a number of years Mr. Dick worked in New York City in various capacities in hotels and then came west to Chicago where with the exception of a few years in Cincinnati he resided until 1870. In the later year he came to Dubuque, and entered the employ of Frank Brede, who then conducted a saloon at the corner of Iowa and Seventeenth Streets. Here he learned the lessons of how to conduct an orderly saloon which profited him so much in after life. After remaining a number of years in the employ of Mr. Brede, the deceased went into business for himself at the stand now occupied by Olie Rhomberg. Sometime later he moved to Third and Main Streets where by the strict attention to business and by maintaining order at all times he built up one of the most prosperous businesses in the state. A few years ago the deceased moved to his present stand on Fourth Street where in connection with his saloon he opened a café which has proven a successful venture.

J. W. Dick was an ideal saloon keeper. It can be safely said that if all proprietors were like him much of the odium which is attached to the business at present would be removed because the evils that find there beginning therein would not be allowed to exist.

The deceased is survived by his wife, his nephew and his business partner. Walter, one brother, Daniel of Boston, and two sisters in Germany.
