Mrs. Joseph (Janet) Arend, 82, 1970 Chaney Road, died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at Stonehill Care Center after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 5 p.m.

She was born on May 17, 1915, in Dubuque, daughter of William and Mary (Shrofer) Moran. She married Joseph P. Arend on Nov. 23, 1950, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

She graduated from the former St. Joseph's Academy, Dubuque. Prior to her marriage, she worked at Flynn Ready Mix Co., Dubuque, for 17 years. She did volunteer and associate work at St. Anthony's School for several years. She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Our Lady of Victory 351, Stonehill Auxiliary and the Power of Prayer. She was a board member of St. Joseph's Academy, chapter of the BVM Alumni.

She was "Nana" to her four devoted grandchildren, who were the light of her life and of whom she was very proud.

Surviving are her husband, Joseph P. Arend; a daughter, Mrs. Sue (Steve) Bonfig, of Dubuque; a son, Dr. John (Connie) Arend, of Independence; her grandchildren, Samuel and Laura Bonfig, of Dubuque, and Ryan and Madison Arend, of Independence; her sisters, Mrs. Pat (Rolleigh) Peterson, of Louisville, Ky., Mrs. Peg (Bill) Roberts, of Edina, Minn., and Mrs. Joan Wilberding, of Sun Prairie, Wis.; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Grace Moran; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Patrick; three brothers, Bill, John and Roger Moran; a sister, Kathleen Murphy; a sister-in-law, Ruth Moran; and a brother-in-law, Alan Wilberding.

Memorials may be given to St. Anthony's Parish, Stonehill Care Center and the Visiting Nurse Association.
