Joseph P. Arend, 87, of 1970 Chaney Road, died peacefully Monday, Jan. 1, 2001, at The Finely Hospital, after a short illness, with his family at his side.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a parish and Knights of Columbus wake service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Arend was a linotype operator at the Telegraph Herald for 49 1/2 years.

He was born on Feb. 19, 1913, in Alta Vista, Iowa, son of John P. "Jim" and Susan (Hoffmann) Arend. He married Janet Moran on Nov. 23, 1950, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dubuque; she died on March 22, 1998.

He graduated from Columbia Academy in 1931. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theatre and received the Bronze Normandy Invasion Arrowhead and five battle stars. He was a member of St. Anthony's Parish, St. Anthony's Men's Society, Knights of Columbus Third Degree Council 510, Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Dubourg Assembly and the Veterans of Foreign Wars 9663. He was an avid golfer and was walking Bunker Hill several times per week until this past summer. He was a loving father and grandfather, and we will cherish him always.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan (Stephen) Bonfig, of Dubuque; a son, Dr. John (Connie) Arend, of Independence, Iowa; he was a proud grandfather "papa" to Samuel and Laura Bonfig, both of Dubuque, and Ryan and Madison Arend, both of Independence; sisters-in-law, Peggy (William) Roberts, of Edina, Minn., Patricia (Rolleigh) Peterson, of Louisville, Ky., Joan Wilberding, of Sun Prairie, Wis., Grace Moran, of Kansas City, Mo., and Violet Arend, of Aberdine, S.D.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Patrick; four sisters, Mary, Martha, Bertha and Marian Gartner; and a brother, Edmund.

A Joseph P. Arend Memorial Fund has been established.
