F. Collier "Cod" Altman, 72, of Dubuque and Fort Myers, Fla., died at 1:57 p.m. Sunday May 9, 1999, at home surrounded by his family. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Congregational United Church of Christ, with burial in Linwood Cemetery, where there will be a flag presentation by American Legion Post 6. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road.

Mr. Altman worked at Spahn & Rose Lumber Co. since 1949, where he served as chairman of the board. He was born on Aug. 26, 1926, in Dubuque, son of Franc and Helen (Collier) Altman. He married Phyllis Herzog on April 21, 1954. He graduated from Dubuque Senior High in 1944. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 6. He attended Oberlin College and the University of Dubuque. He was president and member of the board of directors of Horse Creek Coal Land Company, Charleston, W.Va. He was director Emeritus of American Trust and Savings Bank, past director of Iowa Lumberman's Association, past director of Northwestern Lumberman's Association, past treasurer of the Dubuque Boy's Club and honorary member of its board of directors. He also was a member of the Masonic Order of Masonic Lodge 125. He was the past commodore of the Julien Dubuque Yacht Club and a member of the Royal Palm Yacht Club, Fort Myers.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Altman, of Dubuque and Fort Myers; five children, Franc Archer (Dotty) Altman, of Raleigh, N.C., Penelope Boyden, of New York, James (Barbara) Altman, of Clinton, N.J., Laurel Smith, of Beresford, S.D., and Aimee (Richard) King, of Atkins; a sister, Susan Campbell, of Houston; and five grandchildren, Franc Andrew Boyden, Susan Altman, Frank Altman, Matt Smith and Caitlin Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be given to the Boys' and Girls' Club of Dubuque and to the American Cancer Society.
