Passing of Mrs. Roxa Pitman

The sudden death of Mrs. Roxa Pitman that took place last Saturday at the noon hour came as a big surprise to the people of Farley. She was in the act of preparing dinner when the summons called. Heart failure was the cause of her sudden death.

Mrs. Roxa Brown Pitman was born in Pennsylvania, and was in her 86th year. She was of a family of children, all of which have passed to the great beyond except two, a sister, Mrs. Lou Kingsley, of Fort Dodge, and a brother, A. Clark Brown, of Blaine, Washington. Her folks moved to Iowa when she was but ten years of age and settled at Rockville. She was teaching school in her earlier days and in 1862 she became the second wife of the late Samuel Pitman. They made their home at John’s Creek until the death of her husband in 1881. After his death she continued to live with her step-son, Edwin Pitman, until twenty years ago when she made her residence in Farley.

The funeral was held from St. George’s Church on Tuesday, Rev. C. B. Upson officiating.

Those from aboard who attended the funeral were: Fred Binning and family of Dyersville; Bert Freeze and family of John’s Creek; Mrs. Myrtle Brown Bell, of Mena, Arkansas; Edwin Pitman, wife and son Charles of Lamont, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Thomas M. McFadden, of Monmouth, Iowa; John Freeze and family of Spring Valley.
