William A. BirchWilliam A. Birch, 52, of 2552 Washington St., died at 11:10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at home, surrounded by family.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 3 p.m.
Mr. Birch was employed at R.S. Bacon Veneer for 10 years and later worked as a truck driver at Swiss Valley Farms for 10 years.
He was born on June 24, 1952, in Dubuque, son of Leo and Imelda (Scharff) Birch.
He married Shirley A. Kieffer on Oct. 2, 1971, in Asbury, Iowa. They renewed their marriage vows on Nov. 1, 2000, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He was a member of St. Mary's Parish and the Teamsters Local 421.
Bill was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed classic cars and fishing. He especially enjoyed being with his family and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley A. Birch; a daughter, Stacy L. Birch; four sons, Bill J. (Tracy) Birch, Jesse L. (Kim Shaffer) Birch, Matthew D. Birch and Justin L. (Lisa Fleming) Birch, all of Dubuque; 10 grandchildren; a special "son," David (Teresa) Kieffer, of Belvidere, Ill.; three sisters, Mary H. Birch and Lorie A. (Kenny) Wilson, both of Dubuque, and Lona M. (Jay) Britton, of Burleson, Texas; four brothers, Steven P. (Babs) Birch, Kenny J. (Katie) Birch, Leo A. "Sam" (Michelle) Birch and Kevin L. Birch, all of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lynn R. Birch, Danny Ray Birch, Sr. and Louie J. Birch.
A William A. Birch Memorial Fund has been established.
The family wishes to thank Fr. Ardel Barta, Hospice of Dubuque and the Dubuque Internal Medicine Oncology Department for their loving care and concern for Bill and the family.
