1887 Mar 26, Dubuque Daily Herald, P6, Dubuque, Iowa

John Savage, Sr., died yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock at his family residence in Dubuque township, after an illness of three months. The deceased was born in County Down, Ireland, July 16, 1801, and was therefore, in his 86th year. He emigrated to American in June, 1846, and came directly to Dubuque, where he purchased his present homestead, on which he resided until the time of his death. On November 13, 1885, he was fifty years married, and celebrated the golden anniversary in a becoming manner, and the many who gathered around the festal board thought him hale and hearty enough to live and enjoy the diamond feast. But the relentless hand of Death is forever busy, and plucks daily from our midst the old and the young, but in all these eventful years it was the first call of that unwelcome visitor on the family of Mr. Savage, as his wife and all his children survive him.

His children are Mrs. Michael McCarten, of this city; Michael of Fort Dodge; Mrs. James Smith, of Verona township; John of Dubuque township; Bernard and Mary who still live at home. He was a faithful member of the Catholic church, a devoted husband, and a kind father. He departed this life highly respected by all who knew him. The funeral will take place Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, from the family residence. Burial at St. Philomena’s Cemetery.
