Death of Hugh Morgan

Prominent Contractor Passes Away at His Home in Memphis, Tennessee

The countless friends of Hugh Morgan in this city will be grieved to hear of his death, which occurred at Memphis, Tenn., Thursday morning at 5 o’clock [5 April 1906], after an illness of three weeks with malaria. He was born in Ireland fifty-seven years ago, and came to America thirty-seven years ago. Although never a permanent resident of this city, he had resided here at intervals for a number of years, and was very well known. Three years ago he was married in this city to Miss Mary Savage, whose death occurred in less than a year after their marriage. Mr. Morgan was a levee and railroad contractor, and was one of Memphis’ most prominent and influential citizens. He was a member of Dubuque Council No. 510, Knights of Columbus, and was a man who looked upon fraternity as a sublime means to a glorious end. He was the soul of business honor and integrity and above all a loyal friend. The body arrived in this city Friday evening at 9:30 over the Illinois Central, and was taken to the residence of B. J. Savage, 40 Asbury street, from where the funeral will be held Saturday morning at 9 o’clock to St. Anthony’s church. The interment will be made in St. Philomena’s cemetery at Asbury, beside his wife.

1906 April 10, Daily Times, P5, Dubuque, Iowa

During the past week Hugh Morgan, a member of Dubuque council, passed away at Memphis, Tenn., and was brought here for interment. Judge Matthews said it was his privilege to know Hugh Morgan in life, and he paid a high tribute to him as a Christian and as a man. He came to this country a poor boy and by honesty and industry accumulated a large share of this world’s goods. He, too, has joined his wife, who preceeded[sic] him to the grave but a few years ago. The speaker said that in St. Anthony’s church there is a window which was placed therein member of Mrs. Morgan. Seemingly by an act of Providence the adjoining window was left vacant and now a window to the memory of the husband will be placed there.
