John Schmid, Sr.

John Schmid, Sr., age 94, of Davenport and Dubuque, IA passed away peacefully on June 15, 2016.

A wake will be held on Sunday, June 19th from 1:30pm-4pm at Bethany Home (1005 Lincoln Ave, Dubuque). On Monday, June 20 visitation at 9am and celebration Mass at 10am in Davenport will be held at St. Anthony's Church , 417 Main Street, Davenport. Interment follows at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Davenport. Following interment the family invites friends to gather at the Outing Club, 2109 Brady Street, Davenport.

John was born on February, 5, 1922 in Dubuque, IA to Josephine and Titus B. Schmid. He graduated with his high school degree from Dubuque's Loras Academy in 1939, and received his Bachelor of Arts degree in business from Notre Dame University in 1942.

After college John met and married Bette Davis when he went to work at his family's Crescent Electric Supply Company branch in Davenport, IA. He was very proud to see this business continue today, nearly 100 years strong. He became regional manager, company vice president and also served on the company's board of directors well into his seventies when he retired.

He was a proud member and past president of the Davenport Rotary Club, board member at C.A.S.I. (Center for Active Seniors), supporter of the Kahl Home and the Davenport Community Foundation. He was a devoted Catholic and a member of Sacred Heart Cathedral and St. Anthony's church in Davenport. He was well known for telling a good joke, dancing with his dear wife Bette, hunting pheasants, drinking manhattans, and rooting for Notre Dame, University of Iowa, Chicago Cubs and Bulls sports teams. He was a member of the Davenport Club and the Outing Club. His love of golf was on display (owning a 6 handicap some years) as a member of the Davenport Country Club and Rock Island Arsenal Golf Club. John had a passion for poker and euchre; certainly living up to the phrase "you wouldn't be a Dubuquer if you didn't play euchre". He also never thought that bow ties went out of fashion.

John is preceded in death by wife Bette and son Bob Schmid and his parents Josephine and Titus B Schmid, survived by his sisters Mary Christiansen (CN) and Janet Rhomberg, sister-in-law Mary Schmid (Dubuque), his children Chris Schmid (Scottsdale, AZ), Jack and Mantea Schmid (Dubuque, IA), Kathy and Chuck Munson (Paradise Valley, AZ) and Nan Schmid and Steve Johnson (New York, NY). He received great joy from his three grandchildren, Dana Munson (Florham Park, NJ), John III and Alex Schmid (Dubuque, IA). John Sr. proudly proclaimed that his grandchildren provided a legacy of quality, not quantity, which is certainly very true. John will also be missed by many adoring nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

His family would like to thank the good care he received from his team of devoted nurses, assistants and staff at Bethany Home in Dubuque where he lived for the past 5 years. Everyone knew John at Bethany for his always ready smile and the quick wit he easily shared with all he met. Special thanks to Hospice of Dubuque for their special care making him comfortable in the past several months.
