ASBURY, Iowa - Gerald J. Potts, 82, of Asbury, Iowa, died Monday, August 10, 2015, at Unity Point Health-Finley Hospital.

Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Resurrection, where military rites will be accorded by the Dubuque Marine Corps League. In keeping with Gerald's wishes, there will be no public visitation. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Gerald was born October 26, 1932, in Graf, Iowa, son of Irvin and Anna (Kiernan) Potts. He graduated from Loras academy and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Loras College. He served in the US Air force during the Korean War.

He married Carol Noel on November 10, 1956, in Dubuque.

Gerald was a High School administrator with the Dubuque Community Schools for 27 years, retiring in 1996. He was also a Basketball coach at Loras College for 5 years. After retirement, he worked for the education department at Loras College for nine years.

He was a member of the Church of the Resurrection.

He was also a member of the VFW, American Legion and the Retired Administrators of Iowa.

Gerald is survived by seven children, Mike Potts, of Ashville, NC, Gary and Chris Potts, of Leawood, Kansas, Kim and Keith McLeod, of Hebron, Maryland, Kathy and Tom Herrig, of Dubuque, Bob and Bridget Potts, of Denver, Colo., Tony and Tracy Potts, of Dubuque, and T.J. and Jenni Potts of Dubuque; 23 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a son in law, Tim Timmerman, of New Town, Penn., siblings, Dorothy (Emmett) McDermott, of Bernard, Iowa, and Gene (Jean) Potts, of Dubuque; and a sister in law, Virginia Potts, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Michelle Ann Potts and Mary Timmerman; a granddaughter, Niicole McGee; two brothers, Warren and Cy; and a sister, Mary LaVon Brown.

The family would like to thank Dr. Wahlen and the staff at Tri-State Dialysis, the nurses and staff at Finley Hospital, and all of the other health care professionals for their wonderful care of Gerald.
