Elinor Ann (Murphy) Cody Ginder, 84, of Dubuque, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gabriel Anderson celebrating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3:30 to 7 p.m. today at Hoffmann- Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 6:45 p.m.

She was born on Jan. 18, 1926, in Dubuque, daughter of U.S. Sen. Richard Louis Murphy and Ellen (McGuire) Murphy.

She married Thomas Cody; he preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 1969. She married John Ginder on March 17, 1972; he preceded her in death on Aug. 29, 1993.

She attended the Academy of the Visitation, Dubuque and was a graduate of St. Clara Academy, Sinsinawa, Wis. Ann attended Clarke College, Dubuque, and received her degree from Katherine Gibbs School of Business in Chicago.

She was employed by The Virginia Carolina Chemical Corp. in Dubuque.

She resided in Dubuque except when she and John lived in Chicago, Pittsburgh Pa., and Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Ann was very active in working for the care of children with special needs and was instrumental in establishing Area Residential Care. Her greatest legacy is the strong message she sent to her family, friends and all who knew her: "No matter what God puts on your plate, remain faithful to Him and maintain a great sense of humor." We will truly miss your sense of humor, Aunt Ann.

Surviving are her two special children, Jim and Jane Cody, of Beverly Farm, Godfrey, Ill.; her sister, Ellen (George) Flood, of Corpus Christi, Texas; her brother-in-law, Thomas Piekenbrock, of Dubuque; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Charles J. Murphy; her sisters, Mary Reilly and Imelda (Doe) Piekenbrock; her sister-in-law, Dorothy Murphy; and her brother-in-law, Redmond Reilly.
