JOSEPH CONNOLLY CALLED TO BEYOND

DEATH OF WELL KNOWN CITIZEN OCCURRED WEDNESDAY EVENING AT MERCY HOSPITAL

A NATIVE OF DUBUQUE COUNTY

Had Led Active Business Life and Was Serving on Board of Supervisors

Death closed the earthly career of Mr. Joseph Connolly at Mercy Hospital on Wednesday evening at [9:15?] o’clock. The news of his serious condition on Tuesday caused much surprise among his host of friends for it was generally supposed that he had about recovered from his recent sick spell. He was able to be about his room on Sunday and felt decidedly better. His last illness dated from two weeks ago when he was seized with a severe attack of acute stomach trouble. This in connection with valvular heart trouble resulted in his death. The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Connolly and was born in Table Mound township on March 12, 1870. He received his education in the country schools and later took a business course in this city. After completing his education, he entered the grocery business in company with his brothers. He later became proprietor of a shoe store which he managed until elected to the board of supervisors in 1910.

Mr. Connolly was united in marriage to Miss Effie Aldrich at St. Raphael’s Cathedral fourteen years ago and to this union were born two children: Marcellus and Evelyn. The other surviving relatives include his mother, three sisters, Mrs. William Clark, Mrs. Thomas Powers, Mrs. Frank Smith, and six brothers, William, Thomas, James, Michael, Cornelius and Ambrose.

The death of Mr. Connolly comes as a personal loss to hundreds of friends throughout the city and surrounding country. He was a genial, whole-souled man whose death is a loss to the community as well as to his bereaved family. His life was that of a true Christian and a fitting preparation for his peaceful death.

Splendid Record As Supervisor

Mr. Connolly was elected a member of the board of supervisors of Dubuque county at the general election in November, 1910, succeeding Louis Reinecke in office on January 1, 1911, for a term of three years which would have expired on January 1, 1914.

As a member of the board, Mr. Connolly was a painstaking officer and made hundreds of friends in both city and county and especially among those with whom his official duties frequently threw him in contact. This popularity was demonstrated at the primaries which were held on June 3rd, when he was renominated for the term commencing January 1, 1914, he receiving the highest number of votes cast for any candidate in the county.

Mr. Connolly’s death cast a gloom over court house circles when it became known Thursday morning. The other member of the board had been summoned to a special committee meeting to act on bridge matters but so great was the sorrow of his associates that no business was transacted. However, his chair and desk were draped in mourning and will remain that way for a period of thirty days.

Compliments of Joseph Cahill
