Death of Geo. Barnard, Proprietor of
The Key City House
~
Death has taken another honored citizen from our mists. At quarter past 5 o’clock yesterday (Tuesday) morning, Mr. George Barnard closed his eyes in death, while surrounded by his physician and family. His death was unexpected, but it appears that a severe attach of pneumonia and asthma hast ended the final result. He had been ill about a year, the cause of his sickness being hemorrhage of the lungs, but at times he was able to direct his business. The last severe spell commenced about eleven day ago from which he did not recover.

George Barnard was born in Rochester, N.Y., May 12, 1826, making him nearly fifty-six years old at the time of his death. He was educated and resided in Rochester until he arrived to manhood, when he removed to Lockport, N.Y. He filled the position of deputy collector of customs at Suspension Bridge for a number of years, and resigned that position to take a proprietary interest in the Lorimer House eight years ago next June. Her continued as one of the proprietors of that house for five years. Two years ago last October he leased the Key City House, and during his stewardship he became a very popular landlord, drawing about him a fine share of public patronage. He was married in 1870 in Lockport, N.Y., where he resided while acting as deputy collector of customs at Suspension Bridge. His wife and three children, aged five, nine and ten years old survive him. The only relatives here beside his family is his brother William, proprietor of the Lorimer House. Other relatives have been informed of the sad event, and may arrive in time to attend the funeral which will occur at 2:00 Thursday afternoon from the Key City House. The remains will be interned in Linwood Cemetery.

In the death of Mr. George Barnard the community has lost one of its best citizens. He was popular with the people, kind to friends and courteous to strangers. During his residence in Dubuque not a word has been uttered against him. He was found upright, truthful and honest, a devoted husband and a loving father. The grief of the family is great, and the sympathy ---of a large – of warm friends and acquaintances. A good man has crossed the shining river. Peace to his ashes.
